Shandong Provincial Museum is the first provincial comprehensive local museum established after the founding of New China. It was founded in 1954 and opened to the public in 1956, located on Wenhua West Road, Jinan. The new museum site was selected on the eastern section of Jingshi Road, the main thoroughfare of Jinan city. The foundation was laid on December 29, 2007, and the construction was successfully completed in June 2010. It was officially opened to the public on November 16, 2010, and "Shandong Provincial Museum" was renamed "Shandong Museum" from then on. Shandong Museum now covers an area of 34,000 square meters with a building area of 21,000 square meters. The magnificent and elegant architectural complex embodies the combination of national style and modern art, becoming a major attraction in Jinan, a famous historical and cultural city.
 

The museum houses more than 140,000 pieces of historical cultural relics, over 130,000 pieces (volumes) of modern and contemporary cultural relics and written materials, and more than 8,000 natural specimens. Among the historical cultural relics in the collection, the Dawenkou Culture and Longshan Culture collections are rich. In addition, there are abundant collections of oracle bones, Shang and Zhou bronze wares, pottery inscriptions, clay seals, Han seals, Han stone reliefs, Han Yinqueshan bamboo slips, stone carvings of various dynasties, calligraphy and paintings, and rare books. The natural specimens in the collection cover more than 10 categories and nearly 200 species. Among them, trilobites, Mount Tai swallow stones, dinosaur fossils, and Shanwang fossils have considerable influence in the fields of paleontology and geology both domestically and internationally.
