Beijing Confucius Temple

  This building is located on Guozijian Street in Dongcheng District, Beijing. It was the site for offering sacrifices to Confucius during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties of China. Construction began in 1302 (the sixth year of the Dade era in the Yuan Dynasty) and was completed in the tenth year of the Dade era. The Confucius Temple has a three-courtyard layout inside the main gate. Along the central axis, from south to north, stand the Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Gate, and Chongsheng Shrine. There are 198 steles inscribed with the names of successful candidates in the imperial examinations from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, which serve as important documentary materials for studying the ancient Chinese imperial examination system. The Confucius Temple has been open to the public for sightseeing since 1928. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit and later became the Capital Museum.
 
The Beijing Confucius Temple is grand in scale, covering a vast area of approximately 2.38 hectares, with ancient building area of about 7,400 square meters. It currently has 286 rooms, arranged in three courtyards from front to back. Along the central axis, in order, are the Xianshi Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Gate, and Chongsheng Shrine. Outside the Dacheng Gate, to the east are the Stele Pavilion, Slaughter Pavilion, Well Pavilion, and Divine Kitchen; to the west are the Stele Pavilion, Zhizhai Hall, Divine Storehouse, and the Chijing Gate connects to the Imperial College. According to the "Records of the Imperial College," to the south of the Zhizhai Hall and Slaughter Pavilion, there were originally a Changing Pavilion and a Changing Room.
 
     The Confucius Temple houses a rich collection of ancient relics and numerous historical sites, with stone carvings being the most renowned. The most notable include the Jinshi Inscription Steles, the Qianlong Stone Drums, the Thirteen Classics Stone Inscriptions, and the Ming and Qing Dynasty stone stele pavilions.
