The Working People's Cultural Palace was originally the Imperial Ancestral Temple, a key national cultural relic protection unit. Built in the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1420), it was the ancestral temple where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifices to their ancestors. According to the ancient capital planning principle of "ancestral temple on the left, altar of land and grain on the right," it was constructed simultaneously with the Forbidden City and the Altar of Land and Grain, and is an important part of the Forbidden City.

The Working People's Cultural Palace covers an area of 140,000 square meters. To highlight the theme of ancestor worship, it is surrounded by three layers of red walls and layers of pine and cypress, setting off the magnificent and orderly arranged buildings, creating a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. The architecture adopts a symmetrical layout along the central axis, with the Glazed Gate, the White Marble Arch Bridge, the Halberd Gate, and the three main halls arranged in sequence on the central axis, and the Well Pavilion, the Kitchen of the Gods, the Storehouse of the Gods, and the Side Halls arranged on both sides. The Pavilion Hall (Front Hall) is the venue where the emperor held grand sacrificial ceremonies. The three-tiered white marble Sumeru platform base, the floor paved with "golden bricks," and the beams and columns made of precious golden nanmu wood are majestic, standing 2 meters higher than the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, and are considered a symbol of supremacy. The Bedroom Hall is where the spirit tablets of emperors and empresses are enshrined. The Tiao Temple is where the spirit tablets of the emperors' distant ancestors are enshrined.

The Imperial Ancestral Temple is the most complete and grandest royal ancestral worship complex in China, and the most important ancestral temple architecture in ancient times, known as the "No.1 Temple under Heaven".

In the early days of the People's Republic of China, Premier Zhou Enlai proposed and the Government Administration Council approved its designation as the "Beijing Workers' Cultural Palace", with Chairman Mao Zedong personally writing the plaque, making it a school and paradise for workers in the capital.
