      In the late Sui and early Tang dynasties, miasma spread across the lands of Hunan and Guangxi, causing harm to the people. It was said that on Tiantang Mountain at the southern end of Mengzhu Ridge, located in Hezhou at the junction of Hunan, Guangxi, and Guangdong provinces, there grew miraculous lingzhi mushrooms that could dispel miasma and cure plagues. A young man named A Man, a descendant of a traditional Chinese medicine family, with the support of his fiancée, the girl Miao Hong, declined the villagers' dissuasion and resolved to venture into the treacherous cliffs of Tiantang Mountain, a rugged and perilous peak where wolves, leopards, and tigers roamed, to gather the miraculous lingzhi herb. Day after day passed, and there was no news of A Man. His fiancée, Miao Hong, worried deeply for him, secretly left home and went alone to Tiantang Mountain to search for him. After seven days and seven nights, she failed to find A Man, but she did find patches of lingzhi. She gathered the lingzhi, brought it back, and combined it with Chinese herbal medicines to brew a decoction for the patients to drink. The patients recovered immediately upon taking the medicine, and the villagers were extremely grateful to Miao Hong.

      The villagers were saved, but Miss Miaohong's longing for A Man grew deeper and deeper. She spent her days searching on Tiantang Mountain and vowed not to marry until she found him. As years passed, Miss Miaohong grew older. Local Hakka people referred to older unmarried women as Gupo (old maiden), so the locals also called Miss Miaohong Gupo. One day, the villagers discovered that Gupo Miaohong had disappeared. They searched Tiantang Mountain but found no trace of her. One day, a respected elder in the area had a dream: an immortal told him that the Queen Mother of the West was moved by Gupo Miaohong's touching deeds of collecting ganoderma to save the people and losing her fiancé, vowing never to marry. She summoned her to heaven and conferred upon her the title of Immortal Maiden. The elder told the villagers not to search for Gupo Miaohong anymore. To commemorate Gupo Miaohong, the villagers decided to rename Tiantang Mountain to Gupo Mountain. Since Tiantang means "heaven" and implies the heavens above, the main peak of Tiantang Mountain was still called Tiantang Peak. To honor Gupo Miaohong, during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the villagers built an Immortal Maiden Temple at the foot of Tiantang Mountain on the border between Jianghua in Hunan and Hezhou in Guangxi, for worship and to pray for the Immortal Maiden's protection of the region.
