Shichahai, also written as "Shi Cha Hai", got its name because there were originally ten Buddhist temples around it. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was called Haizi, a wide and long water surface. It shrank in the early Ming Dynasty and gradually formed Xihai, Houhai, and Qianhai, with the three lakes connected by waterways. Since the Qing Dynasty, it has become a place for recreation and summer retreat. The three lakes have rippling blue waves, weeping willows on the banks, distant mountains with dark green hues, and beautiful scenery, making it one of the scenic spots in Yanjing.

Shichahai has a long history. As early as the 13th century, when the Mongols destroyed the Jin Dynasty, the palaces distributed among the scenic spots were destroyed by a great fire. Kublai Khan decided to build a new capital city. Shichahai was one of the most fundamental bases for the planning and design of Dadu (the capital of the Yuan Dynasty), reflected in the following: the central axis of the entire city from north to south was selected closely adjacent to Jishuitan (a lake area); the positions of the city walls on all four sides of Dadu were built based on the distance from the southeast bank of Jishuitan. In this sense, it can be said that Shichahai existed before Beijing City.

The street layout of the Shichahai area was first formed in the Yuan Dynasty, and many buildings in the area are of considerable age, featuring typical characteristics of traditional Beijing architecture. The overall urban planning of Beijing has designated this area as one of the 25 historical districts under key protection. In addition, the residents living in this area have either resided here for over a decade or several decades, or even for generations, forming a simple and hospitable neighborhood living environment of old Beijing.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Beijing municipal government carried out dredging work in Shichahai and built cement railings along the shore. In 1992, the Beijing municipal government designated it as a historical and cultural scenic area. Among the 25 historical and cultural protection areas approved by Beijing in 2000, the Shichahai area is the largest in size.
